Fall 2022 Fashion Week Trends
Fashion week has finally finished and as with every fashion week, it was hard to miss some trends that kept presenting themselves.
These are some of they key things I’ve noticed and am excited about seeing this upcoming Winter.
Velvet
I’m personally very excited for this trend. As a tactile person, textures like velvet always appeal to me. You could say I’m a magpie for soft fabrics!
Velvet is a fabric that denotes wealth and luxury in my books. It reminds you of a mansion with large velvet curtains draped and flowing and harks back to an era where you’d see ballrooms and long dresses.
This season, velvet is used in a number of ways across many collections. There were many trousers, suits and dresses of every length strutting down the catwalk. Embellishments making the fabric look even more opulent and devore velvet too (velvet in which the fabric has had acid applied to it, melting away some of it and leaving only raised velvet patterns such as roses).
Colour-wise, there is always classic black but this season we were shown plenty of electric blue, bottle green and hot pink. These shades typically belong to the winter seasonal colour palette but if these vibrant shades are not the best season for your skin, you can wear this fabric away from your face.
I’m looking forward to seeing velvet pieces grace the high street and add some glamour to our Winter wardrobes.
Long socks
Another trend I couldn’t be happier about! I’ve been wearing long socks every winter since I was 18 and soon everyone will see how great they are.
I don’t know about you but I find tights are the most uncomfortable thing. When I realised that I didn’t want elastic all around my waist in high school, it was my mum who came up with the idea of wearing long socks like she did in the 70’s. They are thicker and warmer and cover almost all of your leg.
The catwalks took notice and paired many different colours and textures of sock with heels and flats alike. I know it can be a little ‘marmite’ to pair a sock and sandal but I personally love the quirkiness of an unexpected combination – not to mention comfort!
These past few years, people have started to value comfort but also want to have fun with their wardrobes again since we can now go out and dress up not only for others but for our own happiness. This has made us become more creative with pairings and take a few risks like a sock and sandal.
If you’re looking to spice up your outfits this Winter I’d say it’s definitely worth a try. Insider tip: if you get a bit cold, put on a pair of shorts!
1960’s doll
It wouldn’t be fashion week without designers taking inspiration from the past. The 1960’s is always an era that’s referenced which isn’t hard – it was a very stylish and groundbreaking time for fashion.
The 60’s was a time where people started to have more money after the war and were travelling for the first time. People were having fun with what they wore and clothing reflected that. It was also the year when the ‘teenager’ was born. Before this people either dressed as children or adults but now with rebellion and a bit of pocket money, teenagers were cutting hems short and wearing outfits that hugged the body less.
This season catwalks were looking very youthful as teenagers nowadays are making money in this digital age and spending them on big labels, brands like Chanel were designing to a younger market to accommodate this.
Look out for micro mini skirts and short shift style dresses in the shops later this year. For that catwalk look, style them with bright coloured tights and platforms like the ‘60’s dolly girl’ once did.
Edwardian romance
Speaking of the past, I noticed that many of the opulent collections took those romantic touches from eras like Edwardian or Victorian.
The last few seasons we’ve seen corsets galore which was no exception this year. These corsets were worn on the outside of course and have been grunged up with trousers, worn with pencil skirts and even over t-shirts.
This year we saw this corset as part of a period dress. These period dresses however, didn’t look costumey. We saw many designers using vintage dress shapes and structures and making them in modern fabrics. Lots of dresses were also modernised by keeping the shape and detail of the past but being worn at a shorter length and styled in an alternative fashion.
It’s a trend that is harder to translate to the high street but I do believe we’ll see subtle nods to this trend in frilly and frothy necklines, sleeves, lace and details on girly dresses and blouses.
Chunky knits
Knitwear for winter – groundbreaking.
It’s probably not much of a trend to report but usually when it’s fall fashion week, you’ll see quite a few inappropriate items for the colder seasons. This year’s catwalks did feature lots of practical and wearable looks that felt quite inspiring too!
There were quite a few chunky knits reminiscent of jumpers my mum used to own from the 80’s and 90’s. We saw oversized fisherman knits, patterned cardigans, chunky hosiery and jumper dresses in a range of cozy colours.
Lots of these big casual knitted pieces were paired with a big puffy dress which I enjoyed. I always like unexpected combinations and the mix of texture and smart and casual felt fun and creative. It’s nice to know that if a frilly dress feels a bit much, it can be made both cool in style and warm to wear this way.
You’re sure to see thick knits in the shops in fun prints with crafty details. Don’t be afraid to inspiration from the runway and pair them with something interesting.
