Holiday Packing Tips

Recently I went on my first holiday since before the pandemic. It was a city break for 3 days and 2 nights to the lovely Bruges. This had me thinking about how I pack for holidays and I thought I would share some tips from my experience. For some of us, it’s been a while since we’ve been away. You can get rusty!

Planning outfits

Firstly, it’s always good to check what the predicted weather is going to be for your destination so you can pack appropriately. Even if it does seem to be all sunshine, it’s always safe to bring a few colder evening and rainy day layers just in case – you never know what’ll happen.

Then think about roughly what you plan to do on that holiday. You might like to be easy going when you go away but it’s always nice to be prepared for a fancier night or an active day.

Some of my clients find list making useful. This can be on paper or on the notes on your phone. Even pictures can help! Before just packing everything straight into the case, I recommend putting everything you intend to bring to bring on the bed in outfits. When you see everything laid in front of you, you can make mental notes of what you’ll wear for each activity and see if it looks like too much or if some of these outfits could do with a spare option.

Extra but not too extra….

As much as I like bringing a few extras, if you’re sharing a case with someone or not going away for that long, I wouldn’t recommend going too crazy. You don’t need the same shoe in 3 colours. Think about items that are versatile and can be mixed and matched with each other. I’m sure many of your shoes lend themselves to a number of outfits.

It can also help if you travel in some of your bulkier pieces so you don’t have to pack them. Although it’s always good to be comfortable on the travel day of course. I like to travel in a heavier shoe for instance.

A great investment that’s not just for holidays is a portable steamer. I used a steamer a lot in retail and fashion styling for photoshoots and I’ve never looked back. You can get them pretty cheap online and they aren’t too bulky to carry in your hand luggage or suitcase.

If you have space, it can be good to bring a few of your own coat hangers. Sometimes there aren’t enough and you don’t want to be caught short. I find that clippy hangers for bottoms aren’t a usual stay in hotels.
