Dressing for Job Interviews

How to dress for job interviews

Firstly, congratulations! You have a job interview. The company you applied to are interested in working with you which means your application excited them.

Now you have to meet them in person and seal the deal. This is the part of the process that really matters. They need to come away from this meeting with a strong impression of you, so that means you must express your personality and be memorable. Let’s look at some fashion tips that can help you do that!

1. Think about who you’ve applied to work for

For instance, if you are interviewing for John Lewis, why not wear something from John Lewis or something in-keeping with their style. You need to show them you understand their brand and their audience, and would look right at home in their company.

2. How do different colours feel?

My next tip is about colour psychology. Red is a powerful and exciting colour and I recommend wearing it somewhere, even if it’s a small accentual touch like your lipstick, tie or even socks. It’s a tip that I follow religiously myself and have gotten through many job interviews with!

3. Don’t forget the details

You can also be memorable by showing a personality quirk on a finer detail, perhaps on an accessory.

Your necklace might have a tea cup because you love tea! You could have playing card cufflinks because you’re great at poker or a fish print dress because you love tropical fish! Whatever it may be, these are great talking points and conversation starters—you’ll be surprised how often your interviewer will notice and point them out. They might have observed your cufflink when they shook your hand or see your socks as you sit down.

Having said that though, it is a fine balance, so don’t go crazy and always think about what is appropriate for your circumstance. If the interview requires smart attire then make sure you are dress smart. And even if it doesn’t, they’ll appreciate the effort of you dressing up. Someone in a jeans and t-shirt won’t be taken seriously and they’ve probably seen a million people in a white shirt and black trousers.

It doesn’t hurt to be creative and think outside the box. Workwear is constantly evolving and changing. Look for interesting takes on smart pieces and think about how you put them together to show your style.
