3 Fashion Tips From Barbie
Hiya! Inspired by the Barbie movie, I thought about what we could learn from a style icon like her. So I hope you enjoy these 3 personal styling tips 💖
1. Injecting your style into any situation
Barbie has done a massive amount of jobs since her birth in 1959. From astronaut to teacher and even coder. And everything she’s faced, she’s chosen outfits that are still her own Barbie fashion loving style whilst hitting the brief.
She shows us that you can do anything you want and not comprise on being who you are or being stylish. Most of the time she’s even managed to crowbar her favourite colour into her outfits.
So much so that we recognise pink as Barbie pink. Which just goes to show that if you love something enough and wear it enough it can become your own brand. I’m trying for Natasha gingham myself 😉
2. Have the confidence to break the rules and make mistakes
Barbie can be a little impractical at times but I think that’s what she’s loved for. She also hasn’t always gotten it right with fashion but for a doll going this long, they can’t all be 10/10 looks.
I personally think a lot of ‘fashion rules’ are things of the past. Clash some patterns, colours and styles. Try the unexpected combo. Wear socks and sandals – it’s 2023. What might have been considered ‘ugly fashion’ is cool now. Be creative!
Be a little impractical if it makes you happy and the occasion allows. Sometimes I let myself be a little cold for style. Sometimes I dress up a bit too hard for a trip to the supermarket.
I had a headteacher once that personally chaperoned a school trip with us young kids. She walked us from our school, through a park to a pizza restaurant. It was a fair distance away and she was in a heels and a killer pencil skirt suit I believe.
No complaints, she felt fabulous and her confidence to stick to her style guns was very charming. Sometimes that person that sees a situation and says let me do it my way how I feel great is extra dazzling for daring.
Barbie has always been a little extra. She’s always gone big and made mistakes along the way but with a big smile on her face. We can all take a leaf out of her book from time to time when it feels right and do a little more and go a little bigger.
3. Buy the thing and wear the thing
One of the reasons I think Barbie has and always will be popular is she’s a dream –you wouldn’t spend money on a regular doll. She’s a fashion doll, she’s been designed to inspire. She’s special, a luxury. Fun to look at, living a glamorous life we can live vicariously through.
Sometimes I think we should buy that item that is a little special for ourselves to wear too, that makes us happy just to look at. Barbie shouldn’t have all the fun. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have an occasion. You’ll make one.
You don’t want to regret the one that got away. If you look great in it and feel happy being in the piece then it’s a no-brainer. Life is short. We make money to live off of course but what’s the point in working so hard if we can’t use it for a dose of happiness here and there.
Not only people who love fashion, but everyone deserves items that they love looking at and being in that they can put on for that instant boost. I hope you have them. If not, I hope I can help you find that magic formula and be that voice that encourages you to wear it.
