How To Dress For a NYE Party

New Year's celebration

I don’t know about you but 2021 has been such an eventful year for me! I had the best time studying Personal Styling at the London College of Style, met some amazing friends there, quit my visual merchandising jobs and found myself (finally!) doing what I love and sharing my best skills as a living. Starting my business this year has been a whirlwind to say the least but I’m so excited to be here and for what 2022 has to offer.

I hope you too have been able to make the most of your year, despite all its challenges, and now it’s time to celebrate! Whatever your plans this New Year’s Eve, take the opportunity to let your hair down and dress up—even if you’re at home with a glass of champagne watching Jools Holland. Here are my top party style tips!

Sparkles ftw!

Perhaps an obvious one to start with, but I love some sparkle at this time of year. You can wear sparkles in any number of ways, however sparkly you are! Try a central glitter piece like a dress or a jumper and work around it with some contrasting flavours like a muted velvet fabric or maybe a leopard print. Or, if you want to apply your sparkles in a smaller way, how about a shoe with studs or shiny star. Even a shirt with silver buttons or a reflective earring can feel festive.

Coats, but make it fashion

The last time I was out on New Year’s Eve was at my brother’s flat when we were up on the rooftop at midnight to see the fireworks light up the London sky. There’ll always be a part of the evening that you’ll end up outside and in the cold, so my next tip is not to let a bad coat let down your otherwise fabulous party look. Suffice to say, an old hiking raincoat over your nice pearly suit or a yellow mac with your starry wrap dress is a no-no.

It is possible to stay toasty and still coordinate with the rest of your outfit! This winter I’ve enjoyed a monotone fluffy jacket as a go-to statement piece. There are so many smart, warm options when it comes to coats, from Borg-lined or aviator style, jackets to wool or faux fur in any colour or print, the possibilities are endless.

And of course, be careful if you’re leaving it somewhere—writing on your name on the label never goes amiss.

Comfy is cool

Guess what, you don’t have to wear heels! That’s right, I (4’11”) said that. Dressing up means feeling confident and brilliant, and that doesn’t mean heels for everyone. I used to feel so self-conscious that I wouldn’t be taken seriously so I’d take a pair of heels with me in a bag. It was heavy, I felt awkward and found it just isn’t worth the pain. Even with the extra couple of inches I was still the smallest in the room anyway! Comfort is often the secret ingredient to feeling confident.

For instance, when it comes to trousers, for example, skinny fit isn’t the only fit out there. You can wear something looser and still look stylish. One of the key focal points when I help you find new clothes in a Personal Shopping experience is to nail the right fit for you more than anything, so that’s size, shape and even colours. I’ve found that getting these basics right can have the most amazing impact and it’s so simple!

However you choose to spend your New Year’s Eve, let’s bring in the new year with style and hope for brighter days ahead! I’m certainly feeling ready to get going again in January and feel so grateful (in the main) for how my past 12 months have unfolded. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported my journey so far, including those who entrusted me to try a service together this year—be it finding your colours or taking a personal shopping trip with me. I can’t wait to help give more people the joy and confidence in what you wear next year.

Lots of love, Natasha
