Melissa’s 2022 Style Journey
In today’s blog (with her permission of course!) I’ll be sharing my super-fun experience working with Melissa, also known as ASMR Beauty on YouTube.
Melissa makes ASMR videos filmed with a whole variety of specialists with a focus on beauty—everything from masseuses and opticians to stylists like me! Working with interesting people in less-conventionally-ASMR fields is what makes her stand out from other channels, including activities like palm reading, acupuncture, reiki, eye exams and bead making. Go check out her channel!
She has grown a following of viewers who enjoy hearing the relaxing sounds and soothing voices, as well as learning from all the practitioners, some with unintentionally ‘ASMR’ voices. And apparently I fit this criteria, who knew! Finally a world where my soft voice and gentle vibes are appreciated 😌
Over the past year or so, since our first Colour & Body Analysis session, we’ve gone on to make a whole series of styling videos together and become friends in the process, for which I’m so grateful for! Read on to discover Melissa’s style journey, covering each of my services in order, which hopefully serves to demonstrate how it all works too. So let’s get into it!
Colour & Body Analysis
I always say Colour & Body Analysis is the perfect place to start a style journey. It’s what gives you the foundations to understand who we’re styling, what colours and shapes work best.
Melissa has very soft porcelain-like skin with pinky undertones, blue eyes and naturally mousey blonde hair. All the warmer palettes overwhelmed her and took the focus away from her face. We discovered that the Summer season (a cooler palette despite the name) was perfect for her.
The pastel shades from the Summer palette complemented her skin tone perfectly, making her look fresh and healthy and highlighting her face in the best way. They were also the tones that she felt most drawn to herself, and that’s always a pleasing outcome!
Now in a Body Analysis, the main thing we’re looking for is to find out what body shape you are. This helps us not only with selecting the right fits and sizes, but really gives us the tools to highlight your best features and hide any you’re less fond of.
In Melissa’s case, a top half proportionate with her bottom half but without overly curvy or busty lines make her what I call a soft hourglass. She told me she isn’t a big fan of her hips so my job as a stylist is to show her how to move the eye away from it.
Style-wise, Melissa’s taste is cute and fun. She’s a little younger than me, likes 90’s clothing and much of her wardrobe was bought when she was in Japan. We bonded about how we both love Japanese and Korean fashion and I hope to incorporate some of that style into her wardrobe in the future. Getting to know a client’s personal traits are really important, as they help to inform me when visualising looks and outfits down the line.
Wardrobe Edit
Wardrobe Edits are often where the session really comes alive, because now we’re able to put into practice what we’ve learned and evaluate the clothes already in your possession.
Something I quickly noticed in Melissa’s preferences was that she wasn’t comfortable showing too much skin and had a few items she therefore felt she couldn’t wear for that reason. There’s almost always a way around challenges like this though, without the need to discard or reject!
Melissa’s more revealing pieces were still wearable by some smart layering. Interesting tops purposefully worn underneath for example is a simple yet versatile solution to give new life to her tricky items. She had a colourful striped top that when paired made a fun and youthful contrast, and the creativity that comes from layering felt quite K-Pop ticking even more boxes!
Everyone has those pieces that they buy which looked good on the hanger but then never know how to actually wear them. Melissa had a honey coloured lacey top that she felt was a bit mature for her cute style. Pairing it with a short high-waisted skirt and chunky knit made this top look much younger and she liked that the colours were all from the same family. It’s all about being creative and giving some fresh ideas a try! Of course we took lots of pictures throughout the process (I know not everyone documents the entire session in a YouTube video 😅) so that she can remember the combinations we put together going forward.
At the end of a Wardrobe Edit, clients also come away with a shopping wishlist designed to fill some of the gaps we identified in the wardrobe. As Melissa isn’t a big fan of her hips, I suggested that she invest in a few plain coloured bottoms in favour of her more patterned and attention-seeking pieces. This trick helps to shift the focus towards her top half, where she can enjoy more edgy styles and of course packed with her pastel Summer colours.
Personal Shopping
So now we have a crystal clear brief to fulfil for a Personal Shop together: to introduce more of her colour palette into her wardrobe. And ideally to find versatile pieces ready for layering and suitable for workwear, as well as home comforts. Lifestyle considerations and other shopping habits, including budget, are always discussed in a pre-shop video call to identify and agree the types of pieces we’d look for.
As Melissa lives outside of London, and to make the video recording/editing process easier for her, we decided to do the shopping experience online. It’s just as effective as an in-person day out, supplemented with a comprehensive moodboard including plenty of visuals and shoppable links.
One thing I like to remind people is that having a Personal Shopper doesn’t mean all high-end and luxury! Melissa, like many of us, was after items that don’t break the bank so high street brands and online-only retailers like ASOS, H&M or Uniqlo can be great places to look—though they can often be overwhelming. That’s where I come in! And I love to source the discounts and sales for you too.
These next 2 videos show the moodboard reveal then a review of the pieces that Melissa decided to try. Packed with lots of successful buys and innovative tips!
While there’s never an obligation or expectation to buy anything, it’s always great when you find pieces that tick every box. Melissa chose 8 items to order that we were able to try on together, including some under-tops, cardigans, a jumper, midi skirt, trousers and a pinafore.
Through the process, we not only assessed each item individually but looked at a variety of combinations that really demonstrate the flexibility in our colours, shapes and layers. Little things like swapping out colours from vivid to light, or skirts to trousers for example, can make a big difference in transforming an outfit. Our videos include effective tips that turn something fun into something more professional and something pastel-packed and colourful to slick and monochrome.
There was a brand Melissa hadn’t heard of before called Cider that I introduced to her, which I’d only recently discovered myself on Instagram. I thought their fun and trend-led pieces would be right up her street, influenced by lots of different subcultures including K-Pop street style that I wanted to share with her. She bought a pale yellow jumper (straight from her colour palette) with a floral print and cute collar. It was a great addition to both her work and casual wardrobe that paired well with the mint skirt she also bought for a sweet and girly look, or with the stone trousers for a more toned down alternative. Tying her hair up added extra focus on the collar for another moment of flair. She looked so great in it all!
