My Spring Summer 2023 Fashion Month Favourites
Hi! Spring Summer 2023 Fashion Month has just ended so I thought I’d share my favourites with you.
As always, I haven’t been sponsored by anyone to write this – though I wish I was haha! Just a Personal Stylist fashion lover nerd sharing my views with you 🙂
Dior
I’m a big fan of Maria Grazia Chiuri even before Dior when she was still at Valentino. Since joining the fashion house, she consistently takes Dior and makes it her own without losing their identity. This year was another hit for me.
She kept to a muted palette of black, white, cream and some florals but it wasn’t boring like Valentino’s collection was without her this year.
There was plenty of historic romance and tailoring that looked feminine and classy. Still pretty youthful too which can be hard to achieve with these big fashion houses. The lingerie notes were lovely and I enjoyed the big boned hoop skirts. Not wearable in every day life but great catwalk fun that we might see on a red carpet. There were sporty details like interesting draw string elements that gave everything that extra edge, creating some really nice shapes.
I also loved the long flowy hems walking down the runway. I’ve seen quite a bit of that this season. Long at the back but a short or mini skirt at the front. This is great to me as you get all the drama of length without being too much and swallowing up the figure. It is also nice paired with the crop top as all the volume is on the bottom. She could make those crop tops in all the prints and I won’t be mad!
Moschino
I love Jeremy Scott, as you might know, and he hasn’t let me down much. His silly yet somehow still sexy collections are what high fashion is about for me. There’s a clear theme to his collections. He takes it and really plays with it, mixing whatever it is into moscino’s tailoring and making a unique hybrid. This season he took pool floats – summer to a tee and had a laugh with them. They were hems, sleeves, pockets shoes nothing was left out. Another joyous collection that put a smile on my face.
The collection felt summery and a laugh yet still very wearable. If I had money I’d love something from him. I like to think that if I were wealthy, I wouldn’t just wear a £50 white t-shirt. I’d pick fun pieces that make me happy and feel worth the price tag which I think he does. It feels joyous and never too silly – it’s always still fashion and still looks fabulous on. Perhaps I don’t need a ballgown inflatable arms but I can’t wait to see pictures of someone else rocking it!
Burberry
Surprisingly Ricardo Tisci’s last collection at Burberry – who knew? Maybe nerdier people saw this coming but it was a shock for me to find out like literally right after that he was being replaced.
Well despite that I loved it. Ricardo, a bit like Maria, took so many classic Burberry elements like the trench coat and the check and played with them in such a fun way. I liked seeing the check enlarged, darkened and in various unexpected fabrics. The chavvy element of it is certainly long gone. Quite the opposite with the gothic and grungy styling of this collection. It felt very cool and street with Ricardo always does so well taking such a heritage brand and making it look so young.
All the lacey lingerie collections really got me this season but I loved how they were layered here. The dresses over other dresses over fishnet tops all sorts. And the textures were so interesting and enjoyable. Dreamy yet punk and cool, a mix that really appeals to me.
Kenzo
Not a brand I usually love but this season really got me. I am always a fan of a sailor collar and I thought it was really cool how it was incorporated into suits. It’s always fun when a suit is elevated in some sort of way and this felt subtle but super interesting and cute.
The collection was bright and cheery and all the tartans clashing is something very me that I was happy to see on a catwalk. In all a collection that spoke to my personal style. Makes me want to go get a sailor collar to put on all my clothes. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for them next year. I try and leave my feeling about past collections at the door when I go looking at catwalk collections as every season can bring a new vibe.
Honoury mentions
Versace
I never used to be a big fan of Versace. I associate it with that scarf and chain print but recently I’ve been really enjoying her catwalk collections. It’s like she finally found the right balance of fun, designer opulence and street-style. It looks exciting and high end. The glittery purples and pinks could be rather small child but it felt cool mixed with the gothic elements. The gothic style looks sexy and fun and wearable even if you’re not a goth – you might just want to borrow that mood. Also nice to see Paris Hilton. She’s fun, I like her and she was the perfect icing on the cake to that collection. Nice to see her nodding back to that iconic sparkly party dress from the noughties that we all still wish we owned.
Erdem
Erdem always has some real show-stopping ballgowns. This year he delivered another glorious collection full of fairy-tail dream dresses for people with money to live our their Cinderella dreams. Fantastic dramatic shapes incorporating bra-like structure with big billowing hems. Feminine yet not over-the top. Gorgeous plays with lace and texture – what more could you want? It feels like a luxury collection that you could see in a museum, on a red-carpet or in a movie. And I’d like to see it.
Yuhan Wang
Yuhan Wang brought another really feminine collection that grabbed me. It felt dreamy and romantic – like a sweeter and take on what Dior was doing with the lingerie. The historic vibe felt like you could see people in it back in the day yet it also felt really now. And although it’s high end, I also believe there will be versions of this in the high street for us normal folk who’d like a taste of this. And I hope so too!
Alessandra Rich
This is the first year I’ve seen a catwalk from Alessandra Rich on Vogue. Usually it’s a photoshoot. This was great anyway and created a really demure vibe that went so well with her clothes. I’m always a fan of the retro girliness she brings. The floaty dresses from the 00’s which you’ll see a lot of designers doing this season were lovely and I enjoyed them styled with the belts and necklaces too. The collection felt very wearable though of course not affordable for me…just aspirational. We’ll definitely be getting some versions of those sexy little slip dresses in places like Bershka so hold on if you’d like some sassy dresses in this style.
Pheeew, and that’s it for this long blog post! I hope you enjoyed it!
High fashion is certainly fun and I am very excited to see how the high street makes it for people like me next year.
If you love high end fashion like me too and would love a bit of that catwalk glamour and some of those trends injected into your wardrobe in an affordable and wearable way that works for you get in touch and let’s shop together.
