What is Colour Analysis

A man having colour consultancy with Natasha Itzcovitz

Colour consultancy is much more than finding out if you suit red or not. It’s about finding the ideal shades of colours to suit your skin tone and personality.

There are many hues of colours out there. These shades have been grouped together in the form of four seasons. Summer, Winter, Spring and Autumn. The hues in each palette reflect how these colours in nature appears at each time of year.

For example, in Summer, the sun is so bright that the world around appears paler. In Winter, the general darkness of light makes the colours appear darker and more vivid. In Spring when flowers are in full bloom, the sunlight is bright but not as strong as in Summer and colours appear at their boldest. When leaves begin to brown and fall in the Autumn, it’s the beautiful earthy tones that are all around us so these shades tend to be muted or neutral.

Colour specialists have dyed fabric drapes in tones from every seasonal palette. When I trained at LCS, I learned how to match these drapes to each individual. I look out for particular signs on the face, particularly how colours reflect under one’s chin, to tell if a colour is right for someone or not.

While secondary to observing these physical traits, matching colours to personality is also key since we all need to feel good in our palette—it’s surprising how closely linked colour and personality can be!

As someone who personally liked and wore every shade imaginable, it was so enlightening (though unexpected!) to learn about the power of wearing our ‘best’ colours. After finding out what my best shades were on the course, I could go shopping with much so much more purpose and direction!

It’s also so interesting how colour can make you feel and impact others around you. I’ve always believed red was a powerful colour. The way that it makes you stop, how authoritative yet sensual it can be. I always try and wear it for interviews and dates but now I know exactly which shade of red will make me look my best, and indeed help others find theirs!

Every time I drape colours for a client, I take my time and make sure they’re happy with their outcome. While it’s naturally a fun and enlightening session, it’s also really important to explain and demonstrate what we discover together in the mirror. The funny thing about colour though, in my experience, is that I’ve found people often naturally gravitate towards their right colours!
